Biography

Daniel Dongyuel Lee is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell Tech and serves as the Executive Vice President of Samsung Research. He held the position of UPS Foundation Chair Professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 2018. He obtained his A.B. summa cum laude in Physics from Harvard University and received his Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995. Prior to his appointment at Penn, he conducted research at AT&T Lucent Bell Laboratories, focusing on Theoretical Physics and Biological Computation. Lee is a Fellow of the IEEE and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and he has received the National Science Foundation CAREER award and the Lindback award for distinguished teaching. He is affiliated with the Hebrew University Institute of Advanced Studies in Jerusalem and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and he has contributed to organizing significant academic conferences, including the US-Japan National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Symposium and the Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) conference. His research group focuses on understanding general computational principles of biological systems and applying this knowledge to build autonomous systems.
