Biography

Daniel Matthews is a Reader and Director of PGR Studies at the University of Warwick's School of Law. His primary research interests lie in Legal Theory, Political Theory, Law Humanities, Constitutional Theory, Climate Change, and Political Ecology. His recent work examines orthodox critical approaches to sovereignty, exploring how these are challenged by the planetary and climatic changes associated with the onset of the Anthropocene. Adopting a transdisciplinary approach, he draws on critical legal theory, political theory, literature, aesthetics, and ecology. Daniel's monograph, 'Earthbound: Aesthetics Sovereignty Anthropocene' was published in 2021 and awarded the Penny Pether Prize by the Law, Literature, and Humanities Association of Australasia. He teaches and publishes in the fields of jurisprudence, political theory, and law humanities. His work has appeared in prestigious journals such as Modern Law Review, Law Critique, and Social Legal Studies. Daniel has also co-edited volumes on law and community and law and ontology. Prior to joining Warwick, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, and he has held visiting positions at the University of Glasgow and the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals and is the editor of the Critical Legal Thinking Blog.
