Biography

Daniel McCafferty is an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba's School of Art, where his academic and creative work reflect a rich background in underground punk and DIY music scenes. His creative research employs both analog and digital mediums, focusing on print, programming, mapping, projection, photography, and video to explore the conventions of designed systems and articulate forms of authority. Central to his practice is collaboration as a purposeful counter-model to labor relations within capitalism. Daniel co-founded the Public Design Unit (PDU) with Patricio Davila in Toronto, which produces large-scale visualizations through community engagement and open-source programming. He also co-founded Data (DD) with Rachele Riley and Joshua Singer, emphasizing the curation and manipulation of data to reveal overlooked narratives. His exhibitions include notable events like Toronto’s Nuit Blanche Festival and institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Daniel has contributed significantly to the School of Art, developing initiatives such as the Indigenous Designer Residence program and has received accolades like the Falconer Emerging Researcher Award. He advises graduate students across diverse artistic practices, focusing on interdisciplinary and critical theoretical perspectives in art, design, and media technology.
