Daniel M. Mulvihill is a Professor of Materials Engineering in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. He earned his doctorate in experimental mechanics and tribology from the University of Oxford in 2012, following undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering. Before joining Glasgow in 2016, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of Limerick, EPFL in Switzerland, and the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on tribology and experimental mechanics, with applications in materials and energy. He has worked extensively on friction, wear, surface topography, triboelectrification, and adhesion, and has explored composite materials as well as metal alloys in aerospace contexts. Professor Mulvihill is currently the lead investigator on a major EPSRC project on textile triboelectric nanogenerators. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, where he has also received the IMechE Tribology Bronze Medal. He actively contributes to the academic community as an editor for the Chemical Engineering Journal and has served as a General Chair for international conferences. Daniel teaches courses on Mechanics of Solids and Materials at undergraduate levels.
