Daniel Pearson is a research associate in the School of Psychology at UNSW. His research as a cognitive psychologist examines the influence of learned experience, particularly selection history, on perception, selective attention, and cognitive control. Daniel is interested in understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying visual cognition with the aim of applying findings to real-world contexts, such as designing alerts and warnings that rapidly capture attention. He further seeks to enhance understanding of psychopathology, specifically how attention to reward-related cues interacts with substance use disorders and psychosis. Daniel completed his PhD in Master of Psychology (Clinical) at UNSW in 2019 and subsequently accepted a post-doctoral position at the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience. He has worked on projects investigating the influence of perceptual cognitive capacity on attention and stimulus detection. Currently, at UNSW, he is involved in projects that focus on understanding how reward-related stimuli, such as those related to money, drugs, or desirable food, capture attention and influence behavior.
