Dr. Daniel Powell

Biography

Daniel J. Powell Jr. is a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, specifically within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is an internationally recognized expert in cancer immunobiology and translational immunotherapy, with a particular focus on the role of T cell responses in controlling human cancer. His research primarily targets ovarian cancer, where he is actively engaged in developing clinical trials involving CAR T cell therapy. Powell is also involved with the National Cancer Institute, where he works on combinatorial approaches to tumor vaccination and studies the roles of immunosuppressive regulatory T cells in cancer. His earlier training at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia involved developing mouse models for human thyroid cancer, which helped elucidate molecular mechanisms of tumor progression and examine the immunological characteristics of thyroid cancer. He has earned recognition for his contributions to cancer immunotherapy and serves on various federal, academic, and industry committees. Furthermore, Powell is a recipient of the Outstanding New Investigator Award from the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy and is a mentor within the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Academy.
