Biography

Daniel Powers is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research interests primarily focus on demography, particularly in areas of infant mortality, fertility, and statistical methods. His substantive work delves into health disparities, with a specific focus on the Hispanic infant mortality paradox and race/ethnic comparisons over time. Powers' methodology includes survival modeling and regression decomposition, and he has contributed to the field with research examining racial and ethnic disparities in birth outcomes. His current research revisits the Hispanic paradox in infant mortality and documents the erosion of the Mexican-origin infant survival advantage among older mothers. Additionally, he investigates the sources of change in infant mortality using an age-period-cohort perspective and compares trends among non-Hispanic blacks and whites. Powers is also affiliated with the Population Research Center and has served as a graduate advisor in the MS in Statistics program from 2006 to 2012. He is experienced in statistical computing and has submitted specialized algorithms relevant to demographic analysis in journals and archives.
