Biography

Daniel Richman is the Paul J. Kellner Professor at Columbia Law School. He received his J.D. from Yale University in 1984 and his A.B. from Harvard University in 1980. Richman has a notable background in criminal justice, focusing his research on areas including national security, criminal procedure, adjudication, evidence, federal criminal law, and surveillance/cybersecurity. Before joining Columbia's faculty in 2007, he taught at Fordham Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law. Richman has significant experience in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where he served as chief appellate attorney overseeing organized crime and narcotics units. He clerked for Justice Thurgood Marshall at the U.S. Supreme Court and Chief Judge Wilfred Feinberg at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Additionally, he has served as an adviser to FBI Director James B. Comey and as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of the Treasury. His honors include Columbia University’s Presidential Award for teaching in 2015, and he has provided testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Criminal Justice Oversight.
