Biography

Daniel Raphael Saban is the Joseph A.C. Wadsworth Distinguished Professor at Duke University in the Department of Ophthalmology, where he serves as Vice Chair for Research Strategy. He has held various academic positions, including Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Integrative Immunobiology. His research focuses on the complex interactions between the human immune system and the nervous system, particularly through the lens of ocular biology. The Saban Lab investigates the neuroimmune connection as a vital area for understanding and treating a wide range of diseases, employing innovative approaches utilizing the eye as a model system. His studies examine microglial cells, specialized immune cells in the brain, using the retina as a unique access point to central nervous system dynamics. Furthermore, the lab is engaged in exploring corneal and conjunctival tissues to better understand pain response, wound healing, and mucosal immunity. He actively encourages collaboration with researchers across various disciplines such as immunology, neuroscience, and bioinformatics to advance neuroimmunology research and is open to mentoring talented individuals in his lab.
