Daniel Schaerer received his physics degree from ETH Zurich in 1991 and completed his PhD in astrophysics at the University of Geneva in 1995. He undertook post-doctoral work at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, USA, and the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées in Toulouse, France from 1996 to 1999. In 1999, he obtained a CNRS researcher position at the Institut de Recherche en Astronomie et Planétologie (IRAP) in Toulouse. He has been a professor at the Astronomy Department of the University of Geneva since 2008, where he leads a research group while on leave from CNRS. His research interests focus on the formation and evolution of galaxies, particularly star formation in distant galaxies, the early Universe, and stellar population modeling. He is an expert in radiation transfer and multi-wavelength observational modeling and has co-authored around 400 journal and conference papers in astrophysics. His teaching responsibilities include coordinating courses for Master and PhD students in the Astronomy Department and directing the Master Astrophysics programme.
