Biography

Daniel Steel is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, holding an affiliate position in the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics and the Department of Philosophy. He earned his PhD in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh in 2002. His research primarily focuses on the ethical and epistemic dimensions of science, particularly in the context of environmental public health issues. He is the author of several influential works, including 'The Philosophy of the Precautionary Principle: Science, Evidence, and Environmental Policy' (Cambridge, 2015) and 'Boundaries: Extrapolation from Biology to the Social Science' (Oxford, 2008). Additionally, he co-edited 'Current Controversies in Values and Science' (Routledge, 2017) with Kevin Elliott, and has contributed numerous articles to leading journals in the philosophy of science. Steel was awarded a SSHRC Insight Grant of $73,500 for the project titled, 'Distinct Concepts of Diversity and Their Ethical-Epistemic Implications in Science,' and is currently recruiting Graduate Research Assistants to work on this grant.
