Biography

Daniel Valella is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2019. His research interests include 20th- and 21st-century U.S. minority literatures, comparative ethnic studies, rhetorical theory, queer cultures critique, and the history and theory of cinema. Valella's current book project, titled 'American Ethos: Race, Coloniality, Literary Persuasion,' examines how post-1945 U.S. minority writers and literary speakers have developed new forms of rhetorical ethos to illuminate shared rituals, iconographies, spiritual beliefs, locations, and ethical values that can help eradicate racism, sexism, homophobia, and social injustices. He teaches courses that are cross-listed with American Culture and Women's and Gender Studies, including 'Queer Color Literature Culture,' 'Latinx Literature U.S.,' 'Rhetoric, Race, American Literature,' 'Identity/Crisis: Under-One-Roof Narratives,' and 'Hustle: American Fictions Con Artistry Upward Mobility.'
