Biography

Professor Daniel Whiting specializes in epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics. He is currently one of the principal investigators on a research project titled 'Normativity: Epistemic Practical,' funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Whiting has led an international network focused on Higher-Order Evidence, and his research covers various philosophical fields, including the nature of normative reasons, distinctions between subjective and objective reasons, and epistemic justification. He aims to develop and defend a comprehensive theory of aesthetic reasons, with a particular interest in the writings of 17th century philosopher Margaret Cavendish. Whiting serves on various editorial and scientific boards, including the British Society for Aesthetics and the editorial board of a multidisciplinary open access journal. Since joining the University of Southampton in 2007, he has taught modules related to aesthetics, history of philosophy, and philosophy of language. Outside of academia, he resides in Pokesdown with his family.
