Danielle Dean is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores geopolitical material processes that colonize the mind and body. She draws upon aesthetics, history, and advertising to reflect on her multinational background—born to a Nigerian father and an English mother in Alabama, raised in the suburbs of London. Dean's art examines the ideological function of technology, architecture, marketing, and media as tools of subjection, oppression, and resistance. She received her Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts and is an alumna of the Whitney Independent Study Program and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Dean has worked on commissioned solo shows at Tate Britain in London (2022) and Performa 21 in New York (2021). Her solo exhibitions include 'Bazar' at the ICA San Diego (2023), 'Long Low Line' at Midnight Moment in New York (2023), and others across Europe and the United States. Dean's work has been included in the Whitney Biennial in New York (2022) and various group exhibitions, showcasing her pieces in significant venues such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Her artworks are part of permanent collections at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Arts Council collection in the UK, among others.
