Dr. Danielle Gilbert

Biography

Danielle Gilbert is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University, where her research focuses on political violence, international security, hostage recovery, and the negotiations surrounding civil wars and terrorism. Her work examines the underlying causes and consequences of hostage-taking incidents, particularly the role of armed groups in kidnappings. A recipient of the Merze Tate Award from the American Political Science Association in 2021 for her PhD dissertation, Gilbert has published extensively in respected journals, including the American Political Science Review and Comparative Political Studies. She has contributed commentary to outlets such as Foreign Affairs and the Washington Post and has been interviewed by major news organizations including ABC and BBC. In addition to her research, Gilbert engages with governments on hostage recovery policies and has spoken at prominent forums like the Aspen Ideas Festival. Prior to joining Northwestern, she held positions at the U.S. Air Force Academy and the John Sloan Dickey Center at Dartmouth College, further solidifying her expertise in U.S. foreign policy and international security.
