Danielle Labbé is an expert in urbanization and planning practices in developing countries. She focuses specifically on the transformations of peri-urban territories, state-society relationships in urban development, urban informality, and the appropriation of habitat and public urban spaces. She received a professional training in architecture and urban design before completing her PhD in urban planning at the University of British Columbia in 2011. Since 2016, she has held the Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Urbanization in the Global South. Her research interrogates the interrelationships between the production and appropriation of urban space in cities of the Global South, employing historical analysis and an agency perspective to explore the dynamics between state intentions, governance practices, and the daily experiences of populations during the urbanization process. Centered on Southeast Asia, her work addresses fundamental issues around state-society relations, urban governance, and informality, contributing to theoretical debates not only in urban studies but also in human geography and urban anthropology.
