Daniëlle Slootjes holds the Chair in Ancient History at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Originally trained in Classics at the University of Groningen, she earned both her MA and PhD in Ancient History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Slootjes has published extensively on the late antique Roman administration, particularly its provinces and dioceses, as well as ancient geography and the history of early Christianity. Her research is characterized by a multidisciplinary vision that consciously discards the traditional boundaries among academic disciplines. She explores the interconnectedness of the administrative structures of the Roman Empire and how they relate to late Roman and early medieval periods. Her recent work focuses on the universal phenomenon of collective behavior in ancient cities, especially in Rome and Constantinople. In 2023, she began collaborating with the UvA 4D Research Lab to develop VR simulations of ancient crowds for teaching and research purposes. As a professor, she emphasizes an integrated approach to understanding the ancient Mediterranean area, advocating for a trans-regional perspective that includes the Ancient Near East, Egypt, and the Byzantine Empire. Furthermore, Slootjes is actively involved in public outreach to promote the study of the ancient world.
