Biography

Danielle Wood is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Program in Media Arts and Sciences, and she holds a joint appointment in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. She serves as the faculty lead for the African and African Diaspora Studies at the Media Lab and is the founding director of the Space Enabled Research Group, which focuses on advancing justice in Earth's complex systems through designs enabled by space. Professor Wood has a strong background in satellite design, earth science applications, systems engineering, and technology policy. Before her tenure at MIT, she worked for notable institutions including NASA Headquarters, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Aerospace Corporation, as well as teaching at Johns Hopkins University and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. A proud MIT alumna, she received her PhD in engineering systems and holds multiple master's degrees in aeronautics and astronautics, technology policy, and aerospace engineering. Wood is a full member of the International Academy of Astronautics and plays an active role as the co-chair of the IAA Space Traffic Management Committee and co-editor of the journal Acta Astronautica. She has received several accolades, including the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award and was selected as a Bloomberg New Economy Catalyst as well as being inducted into the Black Women's Executive Leadership Fellowship. She is also recognized as a 2024-2026 JustTech Fellow with the Social Science Research Council.
