Biography

Daniyal Zuberi is a Professor of Social Policy at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work with a joint appointment at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Since joining the University of Toronto in 2012, he has served as a William Lyon Mackenzie King Research Fellow at Harvard University and has been a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. His research focuses on the causes and consequences of urban poverty, particularly how social policy shapes the quality of life and the hardships and opportunities faced by immigrant workers and their families within the health service sector. Currently, he is investigating social policy, inequality, and poverty in Canada within a comparative context; barriers and resources that shape the experiences of immigrants and refugees in Canadian cities; and policies, programs, and reforms aimed at reducing hardship and inequality in areas like urban investment and health care policy. His work has significant implications for understanding and shaping important social and economic trends, equality, opportunity, and health. Daniyal is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) for an SSHRC Partnership Development Grant focused on Poverty Reduction in Peel Region from 2023 to 2026. In 2015, he was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists.
