Biography

Danqing Liu is a materials scientist with a broad background in electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering, focused on developing 'human interactive materials' that can sense, feel, and communicate with humans and machines. His research fills a gap in the field of molecular sciences, particularly within synthetic organic chemistry, by allowing control over the macroscopic morphology and shape of materials. He employs a unique approach to transfer and amplify responsive effects—such as dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and photo-chemical effects—from individual molecules to macroscopic devices. This is achieved through the incorporation of functional molecules into cooperative host materials, including liquid crystals. Liu earned his master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Delft University in 2009, followed by a PhD from the Eindhoven University of Technology, which he completed in 2013, studying polymer responsive surfaces based on hydrogels and liquid crystal polymers. He has held various academic positions, including posts as Research Fellow at the Institute of Complex Molecular Systems and Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University, where he became an Associate Professor in 2023. In 2020, he received the Michi Nakata Prize for Early Career Achievements from the International Liquid Crystal Society.
