Biography

Daphne Wui Yarn Chan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on designing polymers to address global sustainability challenges. Chan earned her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2013 and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2019, where she developed strategies for designing engineering plastics from renewable protein feedstocks and recycling waste tire rubber. Following her Ph.D., Chan served as a postdoctoral researcher under Marc Hillmyer at the University of Minnesota, concentrating on self-assembled block polymers for ultrafiltration membrane applications. She has received several awards in recognition of her research contributions, including the University of Minnesota’s President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship and the MIT Tata Center Technology Design Fellowship. Chan actively promotes innovative materials and sustainable technologies through her research and education efforts.
