Biography

Dara Entekhabi is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He specializes in civil engineering with a focus on remote sensing applications for studying and modeling the Earth's water cycle and land-atmosphere interactions. His research encompasses a variety of topics including hydrology, land-atmosphere interactions, surface water-groundwater interactions, and data assimilation. Entekhabi leads a science team for NASA's Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) satellite mission, aimed at measuring soil moisture and soil freeze/thaw status using advanced radar and radiometer instruments. His recent projects have focused on estimating land-atmosphere boundary layers, remote sensing of precipitation and soil moisture, and wintertime climate dynamics. Entekhabi's work contributes significantly to understanding hydrometeorology and hydroclimatology through high-resolution data collection and innovative retrieval algorithms.
