Biography

Darien Alexander Williams is an Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Social Work, specializing in Macro Practice. His research areas include environmental and climate justice, Black studies, community engagement, program evaluation methods, racial justice, and social policy poverty. Williams’ work broadly engages with the historical context of Black Muslim urban planning, hurricane disaster recovery, and the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities. He examines the development of counter-institution building by Black Muslim organizations in urban neighborhoods during the 20th century, focusing particularly on Roxbury, Massachusetts. Through a diverse array of sources, such as archival documents, organizational financial records, and interviews, his research challenges traditional assumptions about citizenship, identity, and power in planning. In addition, Williams collaborates with a participatory action research team supported by Florida Sea Grant, focusing on health and spatial justice issues related to climate change in Jacksonville, Florida. His projects advocate for an abolitionist framework in emergency management and involve community organizers tackling the intersection of climate disaster and urban planning.
