Dariu M. Gavrila received his MSc degree in computer science from Vrije University, Amsterdam, NL, and his PhD in computer science from the University of Maryland at College Park, USA, in 1996. He has been a visiting researcher at MIT Media Laboratory in 1996. From 1997 till 2016, he worked at Daimler R&D in Ulm, Germany, where he eventually became a Distinguished Scientist. Between 2004 and 2018, he held a part-time professorship in Intelligent Perception Systems at the University of Amsterdam. Since 2016, he has been a Full Professor at TU Delft, leading the Intelligent Vehicles group. Over the past 20 years, Prof. Gavrila has focused on visual systems for detecting human activity, particularly in applications related to intelligent vehicles, smart surveillance, and social robotics. He has led a multi-year pedestrian detection research effort at Daimler, which resulted in the commercialization of safety features in Mercedes-Benz models. His research currently addresses self-driving cars and anticipatory behaviors of pedestrians and cyclists. Prof. Gavrila has graduated 8 PhD students and 30 MS students and has published over 100 papers in first-tier conferences and journals. He received several prestigious awards and has been actively involved in the academic community as an Area Chair, Associate Editor, and Program Co-Chair for various conferences.
