Biography

Darko Zibar is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark, where he leads the Machine Learning in Photonics Systems (MLiPS) group. He received his M.Sc. degree in telecommunication and Ph.D. degree in optical communications from the Technical University of Denmark in 2004 and 2007, respectively. His research focuses on the application of digital signal processing and machine learning techniques to advance classical and quantum optical communication measurement systems. Zibar's major contributions include a record capacity hybrid optical-wireless link in 2011, a sensitive optical phase noise measurement technique that approaches the quantum limit in 2021, and a 2019 record-bandwidth programmable gain Raman amplifier. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Young Researcher Award from the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg in 2016, an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2017, a Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2021, and the Villum Investigator Award in 2023. Zibar was also part of a team that won the HORIZON 2020 prize for breaking optical transmission barriers in 2016.
