Biography

Darlene Machell Espena is an Associate Professor in Southeast Asian Studies at Singapore Management University, specializing in the cultural history of Southeast Asia. She holds a PhD in History from Nanyang Technological University, awarded in 2017, as well as an MSc in Asian Studies and a BA in Social Sciences from the University of the Philippines Manila. Her research intersects dance, film, and the political landscapes of Cold War Southeast Asia. Through her work, she investigates memory, film, and politics within transnational contexts and engages with interdisciplinary pedagogy in education. As a Course Coordinator for the 'Big Questions' course, she draws upon her extensive knowledge to educate and inspire students in understanding complex historical and cultural narratives. Darlene has a keen interest in how film represents societal issues and promotes critical thinking among her students. Additionally, she is an Associate Fellow at the Prinsep Street Residences, part of the College of Integrative Studies, enhancing the student experience in the vibrant academic community at SMU.
