Biography

Darlene Weston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. She specializes in biological anthropology, human osteoarchaeology, and palaeopathology with a focus on human remains in archaeological contexts. Her academic interest was sparked during her undergraduate studies in archaeology at Simon Fraser University, leading her to pursue a Master's degree in Osteology, Palaeopathology, and Funerary Archaeology from the University of Bradford, UK. Her doctoral research at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, investigated methodologies for interpreting periosteal lesions on human remains using radiography and scanning electron microscopy. Darlene has worked extensively with Indigenous communities, aiding in the repatriation of ancestors and the creation of osteobiographies for ancestors prior to reburial. She joined UBC in 2010 and has been involved in numerous publications exploring topics such as paleodemography, funerary archaeology, and archaeological human remains interpretation. Darlene has also contributed to the training of both undergraduate and graduate students, fostering interdisciplinary approaches within anthropology and archaeology.
