Biography

Darrel Wanzer-Serrano is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Race & Ethnic Studies Institute at Texas A&M University. He received his PhD from Indiana University in 2007. His research focuses on the intersections of race, ethnicity, and public discourse, particularly examining shifting cultural and organizational terrains. His award-winning book, 'New York Young Lords Struggle Liberation,' presents a critical rhetorical history of a significant organization within the Puerto Rican diaspora. He has edited a forum for the Quarterly Journal of Speech, where he contributed an introduction titled 'Rhetoric’s Rac(e/ist) Problems.' Trained in critical and cultural approaches to rhetorical studies, Wanzer-Serrano applies Latinx and Latin American decolonial theories to his work in communication. He is currently involved in critical interpretive research on the discourse of emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions as a co-principal investigator for the EVOLVE HSIs study.
