Biography

Darrell Schlom is a Tisch University Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Cornell University. He received his B.S. degree from the California Institute of Technology and completed his graduate work at Stanford University, earning an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering. After a post-doctoral fellowship at IBM’s research lab in Switzerland, where he worked on oxide superconductors, he joined the faculty at Penn State's Department of Materials Science and Engineering for 16 years before joining Cornell in 2008. His research focuses on heteroepitaxial growth and characterization of oxide thin films using reactive molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), particularly through a 'materials-by-design' approach to discover materials with superior properties. Schlom has published over 750 papers and holds 15 patents, achieving an h-index of 103 and over 55,000 citations. His work has received recognition through numerous prestigious awards from relevant societies. He is a fellow of multiple professional societies and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Schlom was named Tisch University Professor in 2023.
