Dr. Darren Curnoe

Biography

Darren Curnoe is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, focusing his research on human origins. His work extensively examines both physical (fossil) and archaeological (ecological/cultural) evidence regarding human evolution, particularly within the human genus, Homo. Curnoe has analyzed fossil evidence dating back more than two million years and has studied the evolution of modern humans (Homo sapiens) over the past 200,000 years. He has collaborated with various institutions across Australia, China, South Africa, Kenya, and Malaysia throughout his nearly twenty-year research career. Current projects include understanding human origins in East/Southeast Asia and Australasia. Notable work includes his 2012-2015 publications on the Red Deer Cave people, archaic humans who existed approximately 10,500 years ago and likely interbred with modern humans. He has also focused on excavating Pleistocene archaeological sites in Borneo and has contributed to the detailed chronological framework for early human evolution research in South Africa. Curnoe's publications can be found in reputable open-access journals like PLoS One and Scientific Reports, and he has played key roles in uncovering the complexities of our human past.
