Biography

Darren Gergle is the Bao Family Professor at Northwestern University in the School of Communication, where he specializes in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). His research aims to enhance the theoretical understanding of how technological mediation affects communication and focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of novel collaboration technologies. As a Co-Director of Graduate Studies for the PhD in Technology and Social Behavior, he plays a pivotal role in shaping academic programs that blend technology and social science. Gergle holds a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as an MS in the same field and a BA in Cognitive Psychology, both from the University of Michigan. He also obtained a BFA in Printmaking and Sculpture from the University of Michigan. His academic accolades include being a finalist for the Microsoft New Faculty Fellowship in 2007 and receiving the IBM PhD Fellowship from 2003 to 2006. He teaches several courses including Applied Research Methods in Media Technology and Understanding Technology and Human Interaction.
