Biography

Darren O'Byrne is a historian specializing in modern German history, particularly the period from 1871 onwards with a focus on the history of memory related to National Socialism. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from University College Dublin. Throughout his academic career, he has held fellowships at prestigious institutions including the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich. Currently, he is a Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge, where he teaches modern European and German history. O'Byrne's research interests encompass a range of themes such as the Reich, World War II, the Weimar Republic, and sports history, alongside the politics and ideology of the era. He has co-edited the 'Handbook of Nazi Ideology' and is working on monographs concerning the history of the upper ranks of civil service in Nazi Germany and a double biography of football manager Hugo Meisl and his brother, Willy.
