Dr. Darryl Cressman

Biography

Darryl Cressman is a philosopher of technology working within the traditions of the humanities and social sciences. As a founding member of the Society for the History and Philosophy of Technology, he collaborates with philosophers, historians, and social theorists to explore the implications of technological advancement. His research encompasses a diverse set of themes, including Science and Technology Studies (STS), media theory, and the history of technology, emphasizing critical theory and political economy. Cressman's current work focuses on the historical and philosophical aspects of technology, particularly in relation to Dutch and French philosophies of technology. He has authored papers on notable figures such as Herbert Marcuse and Harold Innis, and has written about actor-network theory, acoustic architecture, and conceptual histories of disruptive innovation. Cressman edited "Building Musical Culture in Nineteenth-Century Amsterdam," published in 2016, and co-edited the upcoming volume on Langdon Winner's work. His academic trajectory includes a PhD from Simon Fraser University in communication, where he investigated the aesthetic philosophy associated with architectural acoustics. He has actively contributed to national and international scholarships and has received several teaching awards for his dedicated involvement in educational programs.
