Dr. Daryl Oakes

Biography

Daryl Oakes is a Clinical Professor in Anesthesiology at Stanford School of Medicine with over 20 years of clinical experience specializing in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. He serves as the Associate Dean for Post Graduate Medical Education and is the Vice Chair of Clinical Educator Affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology. His academic contributions focus on education and training for anesthesiologists, and he developed the education pathway for Stanford anesthesiology residents to learn perioperative echocardiography in 2007. He has taught echocardiography to medical students, residents, and fellows and has delivered lectures nationally on various topics related to transesophageal echocardiography and cardiothoracic anesthesiology. In 2017, he was appointed Program Director of the Stanford Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship, which expanded from four to eight fellows and gained national recognition for its high quality. Oakes has also taken a leadership role in the Stanford Center of Continuing Medical Education since 2018, enhancing educational programming focused on healthcare disparities and physician leadership development. His commitment to mentorship has led to the creation of initiatives supporting professional development in the field. He has received several awards for his work, including the 2023 WICTA “SHE LEADS” Award for supporting women in medicine, and is a recognized leader elected to the Association of University Anesthesiologists.
