Biography

David Abbott's research applies investigative techniques to develop animal models of female reproductive pathophysiology and elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms underlying a variety of reproductive and metabolic health disorders commonly found in adolescent girls and women. His work primarily focuses on nonhuman primate models of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), studying both prenatally androgenized (PA) and naturally occurring hyperandrogenic female macaques. PCOS is a common cardiometabolic endocrinopathy in females that features obesity and perturbed insulin-glucose homeostasis. Abbott is investigating the importance of hypothalamic estrogen synthesis and signaling in the regulation of metabolic, reproductive, and neuroendocrine sexual function in female nonhuman primates. This involves performing MRI-guided hypothalamic infusions of small interfering RNA expressing viral vectors targeting aromatase and estrogen receptor alpha, followed by comprehensive metabolic and behavioral phenotyping.
