Dr. David Archibald

Biography

David Archibald is a Professor in the field of Political Cinemas at the University of Glasgow, where he has actively contributed to Theatre, Film and Television Studies. His research focuses on film history with a particular emphasis on the cinematic representations of the Spanish Civil War and the intersection of cultural production with broader social and political contexts. Archibald's creative research includes the production of seven short films and the critically acclaimed documentary 'Govan Young' (2017), which he co-directed. His academic career spans several positions at the University of Glasgow, starting as a University Teacher in 2006 and rising through the ranks to a Senior Lecturer and then to a Professor. He has also taught at the Edinburgh College of Art. Archibald has received numerous grants for his research, including the Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Doctoral Scholarship and funding from Creative Scotland. He is involved in supervising PhD projects and is particularly interested in the role of cultural activities within political landscapes. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Archibald participates in various film culture initiatives in Scotland, and has served on multiple boards, including the Africa in Motion Film Festival.
