David Battisti is a Professor and the Tamaki Endowed Chair at the College of the Environment. He is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the natural variation of the global climate system. His work involves understanding the interactions between the ocean, atmosphere, and land sea ice, particularly how these interactions lead to variability in climate on time scales ranging from months to decades. He studies the impacts of climate variability and climate change on global food security, as well as the mechanisms responsible for the significant 'abrupt' global climate changes observed during glacial periods. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with several awards for both his research and teaching, including the Sustainability Science Award from the Ecological Society of America and the Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal from the American Meteorological Society, which is the highest award given by that society. He is also a Fellow of the Food Security Institute at Stanford University and has been elected a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
