Biography

David Beard is a Professor of Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford. He is a National Institute for Health Research Senior Investigator and leads the Surgical and Complex Trials group. His work includes serving as the Director of the Surgical Intervention Trials Unit (SITU) and he is also recognized as an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his contributions to surgical science. Beard's academic background includes a Master's in Biomedical Science from King's College London and a Doctorate in Medicine from Oxford where he focused on knee joint proprioception and mechanisms following anterior cruciate injury. He has held senior academic posts in both the UK and Australia and previously worked as a physiotherapist in various clinical roles. His current research interests include surgical clinical trial methodology, placebo control designs, and various musculoskeletal interventions. Beard supervises PhD and MSc students at NDORMS and regularly examines for the University.
