Biography

David Ben-Zvi is the University Chair of Mathematics, specializing in geometric representation theory. He earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1994 and his doctorate from Harvard University in 1999 under the supervision of Edward Frenkel. Joining the University of Texas at Austin in 2003, Ben-Zvi previously held postdoctoral positions at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the geometric categorical aspects of representation theory and their connections to the Langlands program, topological quantum field theory, and derived algebraic geometry. He received recognition for his contributions to teaching by being awarded the President’s Associates Centennial Teaching Fellowship in Mathematics at UT Austin. Ben-Zvi is also a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, elected in 2012. His research aims to apply a geometric perspective to provide a unified understanding of phenomena in algebra and physics, with a vision that extends the traditional paradigm of representation theory into the domain of quantum mechanics through the incorporation of rich algebraic structures and dualities in quantum field theory.
