Biography

David Betz obtained his BA and MA from Carleton University, Ottawa, and his PhD from the University of Glasgow, joining the Department shortly after completing his PhD in 2002. His work broadly focuses on contemporary military affairs, examining aspects of strategy at both the tactical and operational levels. He has advised governments and international organizations, contributing to doctrine and policy on significant research topics. Betz has a somewhat active media presence and is open to guest lectures. He is currently the academic director of the MA War Studies programme and welcomes inquiries from prospective students. His research areas include Insurgency, Counterinsurgency, Civil Wars, Culture Wars, Information Warfare, and Military operations. He teaches core courses and modules on Theory and Practice of War and has supervised numerous successful PhD candidates. His recent books include "Guarded Age: Fortification in the 21st Century" and "Carnage and Connectivity." Betz has published a significant number of scholarly articles and book chapters, with recent works focusing on civil wars being widely recognized in military strategy literature.
