Dr. David Beyer

Biography

Dr. David Meigs Beyer is a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology at Penn State University. He holds a B.S. in Arts Science from Syracuse University, an M.S. in Plant Pathology from Penn State University, and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the same institution. Dr. Beyer's professional journey began as a mushroom grower in Ontario, Canada, in 1979 before transitioning to research and extension at Penn State University. His research focuses on mushroom cultivation, composting, disease management, and sustainable practices within the North American mushroom industry. He has been awarded a $1.4 million Organic Research Extension Initiative grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop tools and strategies to aid organic mushroom growers in combating diseases and enhancing profitability. His ongoing research includes exploring alternative materials for mushroom substrates and addressing new mushroom pathogens. Dr. Beyer also leads educational workshops and annual programs to support mushroom growers globally, emphasizing the importance of innovative techniques in this vital agricultural sector.
