Dr. David Black is an Honorary Research Professor at the University of New Brunswick with over 45 years of experience in archaeological research focused on the Canadian Maritimes. His academic interests encompass prehistoric archaeology, geoarchaeology, structural stratigraphic analyses of coastal shell-bearing sites, zooarchaeology, and human ecology, particularly concerning hunter-gatherer-fishers adapted to marine shorelines. His master's and doctoral research projects primarily involved excavations at coastal sites along the mouth of Passamaquoddy Bay, including various islands and areas within the traditional territory of the Passamaquoddy people. Dr. Black has excavated pre-contact sites and early Loyalist period historic sites, contributing significantly to the understanding of local archaeological contexts. His research aims to document patterns of Indigenous exchange and interaction around lithic materials in response to European contact. He was invited to contribute to a chapter on lithic material research in collaboration with the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq. In 2023, Dr. Black received the Smith–Wintemberg Award from the Canadian Archaeological Association for his contributions to the field.
