Biography

David R. Boyd is an environmental lawyer and internationally renowned expert in human rights and the environment. He holds a PhD in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from the University of British Columbia and a JD from the University of Toronto, alongside a business degree from the University of Alberta. His primary focus is on identifying laws and policies that can accelerate the transition towards an ecologically sustainable future both in Canada and globally. His areas of particular interest include environmental justice, environmental rights and responsibilities, the rights of nature, and the debate on regulating economic instruments alongside urban environmental issues. In addition to his academic role, Boyd was appointed as the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment in August 2018. Boyd has authored seven books and over 100 articles on environmental issues, with notable recent publications including 'The Optimistic Environmentalist' and 'Cleaner, Greener, Healthier: Prescription for Stronger Canadian Environmental Laws and Policies'.
