Biography

David Bretherton is a music theorist and analyst specializing in European common-practice period and queer music theory. Currently, he holds a prestigious Arts and Humanities Research Council Leadership Fellowship for a project entitled 'Queer Music, Queer Theory, Queer Music Theory'. He joined the University of Southampton in 2007, initially as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow attached to research projects, and has since been promoted to Lecturer and then Associate Professor. Bretherton is a founding Trustee of the Society for Music Analysis, which was relaunched as an incorporated charity in 2016. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board for Music Analysis and co-leads the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in Music Studies network’s Physical, Sensory and Cognitive Differences Working Group. He is actively involved with the local branch of the University College Union, working on equality issues within the institution. David’s academic work includes numerous publications, and he supervises undergraduate dissertations in areas related to 19th-century European music, theory analysis, and queer musicology.
