Dr. David Burns

Biography

Professor David Burns conducts research in bioanalytical chemistry with a focus on biosensors and biospectroscopy, particularly in minimally invasive techniques for assessing the energetic status of biological systems. His work spans multiple disciplines including spectroscopy, chemometrics (bioinformatics), image processing, and radio frequency analysis, with applications in ultrasound studies of biomedical problems related to cellular respiration, metabolism, muscle, blood, and lung oxygenation, as well as fetal health and neurodegenerative diseases. Professor Burns' current research explores the fundamental aspects of bioinformatics and non-invasive near-infrared assessments of health, aging, and development using smart polymer nanosensors to measure low concentrations of environmental toxins and oxidative stress metabolites. The techniques developed through his research aim to make significant impacts in medical, biotechnological, and environmental fields.
