David Butman grew up in Gloucester, MA, where he completed a major in economics before pursuing a double major in environmental science. After college, he worked as a fisheries observer for the National Marine Fisheries Service in the North Atlantic, which prompted his shift to environmental work in Massachusetts at the Dept. of Environmental Protection, focusing on watershed analysis. He then moved to Woods Hole, MA, and worked as a research assistant at the Woods Hole Research Center, estimating biomass in forests in Siberia using spaceborne satellites. This experience fueled his passion for satellite research, leading him to the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies to complete dual master's degrees and a Ph.D. with a focus on carbon cycling in inland water systems. He developed a Post-Doc at the U.S. Geological Survey and eventually secured a position at the University of Washington. Outside of academia, but enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, attending soccer matches, hiking in the Pacific Northwest, and fixing up his Seattle home.
