Dr. David Calder

Biography

David Calder is a Senior Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Manchester. His research explores the intersection of aesthetics, politics, and ethics in performance and public space, with a particular focus on European contexts. He examines performance within the professional sector, engaging with funding bodies, residencies, festivals, and networks, analyzing how theatrical events create embodied encounters between performers and spectators. His notable publications include a book titled "Street Theatre Production in Postindustrial Space: Working Memories" (published in 2019), which critiques the involvement of contemporary French street theatre companies in urban redevelopment projects. Calder has garnered accolades such as the Honourable Mention for the Outstanding Article Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the Oscar G. Brockett Essay Prize from the American Society for Theatre Research. In addition to his roles in academic research, Calder is a playwright whose works have received recognition, including the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award and the ATG Playwright’s Prize. He is co-convenor of the Performance Publics Spaces Working Group within the International Federation for Theatre Research. Calder maintains a commitment to teaching theatre history and theory, fostering students' skills in constructing arguments rooted in evidence and creative academic writing.
