David Carpenter is a leading authority on the history of Britain during the central Middle Ages. Prior to joining King's College London in 1988, he held lectureships at Christ Church, Oxford; St Hilda’s College, Oxford; the University of Aberdeen; and Queen Mary College, University of London. He was educated at Westminster School and earned his doctorate from Christ Church, Oxford, supervised by J.O. Prestwich. Carpenter is a principal investigator on the AHRC funded Henry III Fine Rolls Project (2005-2011) and is currently a co-investigator for several AHRC funded projects. His research interests include the Magna Carta, the reign of King Henry III, and the political culture of medieval Scotland. He has published extensively in the areas of English social, economic, architectural, military, and political history of the thirteenth century. Carpenter is engaged in producing a biographical study of the reign of Henry III (1216-1272) and has a forthcoming book with Penguin on the Magna Carta, scheduled for publication in 2014. He is well-versed in supervising PhD students on a diverse range of topics related to medieval history.
