Biography

David Hing-Kwei Chui, MD is an Emeritus Professor at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. With a longstanding clinical research interest in hemoglobin disorders, he has contributed significantly to the understanding of population genetics, genotype-phenotype correlations, and genetic modifiers that affect fetal hemoglobin expression. Dr. Chui received his MD from McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1963 and subsequently joined the faculty at McMaster University in Ontario, where he rose to the rank of full professor by 1982. Throughout his career, he has enjoyed teaching and mentoring students, residents, and fellows. Notably, he served on the editorial board of the journal BLOOD and has held various leadership roles within the American Society of Hematology and the Thalassemia Foundation of Canada. Dr. Chui joined the Boston University in 2003 and his research expertise includes globin gene mutations and thalassemias. He has been involved in numerous NIH-funded projects and continues to be a prominent figure in the field of hematology and regenerative medicine.
