Dr. David Clifton

Biography

David Clifton is an accomplished professor at the University of Oxford, holding the position of Royal Academy Engineering Chair in Clinical Machine Learning. He leads the Computational Health Informatics Laboratory, focused on leveraging artificial intelligence in healthcare. His research has led to patented systems in jet-engine health monitoring, as well as advancements in AI-based methods for healthcare. His work encompasses development in-hospital and in-home AI-driven interventions. He has been integral in forming international collaborations such as the Oxford-CityU Centre for Cardiovascular Engineering in Hong Kong and the Wellcome Trust’s Flagship Centre for AI healthcare in Vietnam. He has received numerous accolades for his contributions to engineering and healthcare, including the IEEE Early Career Award in 2022. Professor Clifton's research also involves critical topics such as time-series analysis and natural language processing, aiming to translate these innovations into practice, especially in low- to middle-income countries. He is a mentor to doctoral students, providing guidance and support in their academic pursuits, reflected through his involvement with competitive scholarships like Rhodes and Clarendon. His lab is known for addressing real-world challenges in AI healthcare, offering a broad range of projects.
